Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect in the first session?
In the first session, it is essential to share with the Therapist about the reason you have decided to seek therapeutic services. Throughout the session, you work in partnership with the Therapist to discuss what brought you in, discover what goals you might have, and to determine if the Therapist and space feel like the right fit for you.
At Westport Counseling Associates, we recognize that the most important part of treatment is the therapeutic rapport between the Therapist and the Client. For successful treatment, it is vital to find and choose the right Therapist for you!

What do you mean, the "right fit?"
Sometimes a Therapist does not have a specific specialty to best help with a certain issue. For example, if an individual is struggling with Substance Misuse, it is vital that they are being treated by a Therapist specifically trained to offer that type of therapy.

Additionally, you may find that you just don't click with the Therapist - and that's OKAY! A well-trained Therapist understands that the Client must feel safe and trusting throughout treatment. If you trust your Provider (a therapist, a doctor, etc.) then when the difficult parts come up, you are confident and trusting that they have your best interests at heart.

How long does therapy take?
The short answer is - it depends! Some individuals find short-term therapy (between 3-6 months) has helped them to process and grow into a better state of mind. For others, they choose to continue therapy long-term.

Some clients choose to schedule therapy sessions 1x per week, while others may schedule every other week. This decision is typically made by the Client, but this can be discussed during your therapy session to determine the best course of action for the individual.
